The blackberries have been coming in for nearly two months now and some finally started to ripen as early as two weeks ago. However, these berries were few and way ahead of the regular season, actually blending in with the end of dewberry season. Today was the first day we were able to collect a usable amount. These blackberries grow pretty close to the dewberries, but seem like they prefer a bit more shade than the dewberries, which extended past the wood’s edge into fields.  Like the dewberries, the rain is a huge factor in how big and juicy the berries grow, so the canes in lower areas produce a bit better as they stay wetter.

Recipe

• 2 pounds blackberries
• 1 cup sugar
• 1/2 medium lemon, zested and juiced
